World’s Largest Drive in Atlanta, GA

There is a Varsity location in Athens, but being so close to Atlanta I had to make a visit to the original. The Varsity is the world’s largest drive in restaurant. It is located in downtown Atlanta, right across the street from Georgia Tech.

It has been around since 1928 and is what I consider a food landmark. If you have been to Atlanta, then you have to have heard about the Varsity. It can seat 800 inside and fit 600 cars in its parking lot. The sheer size and volume that is does is amazing! I have never seen a restaurant serve that many people. I had to order their most popular items, Chili Dogs, Onion Rings, and an Orange Drink. The Onion Rings were amazing! The fry coating was light and flaky. This is the coating that all onion rings should have. I am not a fan of rings that have so much batter on them that you can’t even taste the onion. If you are in Atlanta and are in the mood for a burger or dog, you have to make a trip to the Varsity.

Have you been to the Varsity?

What restaurants do you consider a food landmark?

Anna - Frosted Orange, not orange drink! :) Glad you enjoyed Athens and Atlanta. They’re my 2 favorite cities!

Kate - Thank you, Anna! :D There’s a Frosted Chocolate too, but it’s nowhere near as good as a Frosted Orange. If the Varsity’s not a landmark, nothing is. Here in Lexington we have the Parkette Drive-In and Burgers N Shakes, the latter which still sells burgers starting at $.84 – still the best shakes around town, too. If you ever make it to Lexington, KY and need some places to photograph, let me know – I’ll send you in all the right directions.
