fried catfish and sides Oxford,MS

Ajax Diner, in Oxford,MS, is located right across from the courthouse. For those of you who have never been to Oxford, the courthouse is the beautiful white building that sits in the center of down town. There is a square of charming two story shops/apartments around the courthouse. You can find Ajax Diner in one of these buildings.

Ajax’s menu is full of all the best soul food dishes you could imagine. It was an incredibly tough decision, but I decided to go with the fried catfish as my entree. Deciding what two sides to accompany that catfish with was even more difficult. When my options included, Sweet Potato Casserole, Turnip Greens, Butter Beans, Broccoli/Rice Casserole, Fried Eggplant, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Potato Salad, Black Eyed Peas ,Coleslaw, Red Beans and Rice, Cornbread Dressing, Rice and Gravy, Hashbrown Casserole or  Mac and Cheese how does one decide?

In the end, I selected the Sweet Potato Casserole and Red Beans and Rice. The Catfish was awesome. It was tender with a well seasoned crispy coating. It had been a really long time since I had eaten Catfish, it has a different taste than most fish, but it is really good kind of different.

The sweet potato casserole was really good, but the stand out side to me was the Red Beans and Rice. I could tell that I was in a different part of the South. In NC, Red beans and Rice is not a typical side, but in Mississippi I could definitely tell the New Orleans influence was there. The beans and rice were full of Cajun flavor. Based upon the dishes I had, I will have to make a return trip and try the rest of the sides.

Brianna - Just stumbled on your website through Tastespotting. I went to Ole Miss and I miss Ajax like crazy!! But, if you want the absolute best catfish in the whole world, you need to go to Taylor Grocery. I don’t even like catfish and I love there’s! Have a great time in Oxford, and be sure to check out Bottletree and Volta too

March 18, 2010 - 4:10 pm

Taylor - Thanks for the comment Brianna! I went to Taylor Grocery on my visit, but sadly it was closed. I will definitely have to make a trip back!

Jessica - Hi, I just stumbled across your blog through foodgawker. Dudddde, you should totally hit up Tuscaloosa, AL as one of your college town tours! There’s so many great places to eat, like Archibald’s BBQ and Nick’s Filet House (aka Nick’s in the Sticks… they have this magicial concoction of a drink called the Nicodemus), and numerous other places. Anyway, just thought I’d stop by and gloat about this great little Southern town!

March 16, 2010 - 3:41 pm

Taylor - Thanks for the suggestions Jessica, Tuscaloosa is definitely on my list of places to check out.

March 16, 2010 - 3:42 pm

Taylor - Thanks Dawn, Sweet potato is amazing, I would definitely suggest trying it!

Green Beer!

Next Wednesday is St. Patrick’s Day. If you are like me, you will probably be drinking green beer and celebrating this weekend. Green beer is very easy to make. All you need is green food coloring and your favorite light beer.

The Elvis Cupcake!

In Nashville, I had an Elvis Panini. When I was in Athens, I had an Elvis Doughnut. This made me think, what else can I make that is Elvis inspired? Allegedly Elvis loved to eat peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwiches. Using these three ingredients as inspiration, I decided to make THE ELVIS CUPCAKE!

A dessert that only gets better with age… Oxford, MS

One of my favorite desserts (it is impossible to name a favorite) is banana pudding. When in Oxford, I heard from multiple sources that I needed to check out the BBQ and banana pudding at Handy Andy’s Grocery. I usually address dessert second, but in this case we are dealing with banana pudding. Banana pudding is one of the few things that trumps my love of BBQ.

How do you make bacon better? Add Brown sugar!

If you can not tell by now, I am a HUGE Bacon fan. I view bacon more as a condiment. You can add bacon to anything and it will make it better! You can eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is really no wrong time of day to eat bacon. You could even eat it right now as you are reading this.

Here in Lexington we have the Parkette Drive-In and Burgers N Shakes, the latter which still sells burgers starting at $.84 – still the best shakes around town, too. Lauren - Hi there! I just stumbled across you, and…great blog! I am a law student in Athens (although I live in Atlanta), and I must say, Last Resort is absolutely an Athens staple! The red velvet is indeed amazing (Cecilia Villaveces did my wedding cake!). BUT you must try the white chocolate cheesecake the next time you visit the Resort. Call ahead and make sure they have the cheesecake…it only comes in on certain days of the week, and believe me, it goes fast. Real fast. Because it is heaven. :) Then take some beautiful photos!
