In Clemson, SC, the influence of the Clemson Tigers is everywhere. This town bleeds purple and orange. To prepare for my quest of finding Clemson’s best food, I consulted current students and Alumni. The Esso Club was on all of their lists.

After visiting I can definitely see why. Originally a gas station, the Esso club now does a different type of fueling. Gas has been replaced with beer and food that is necessary for the Clemson faithful to cheer on their Tigers. Located across the street from the football stadium, thousands will fill the parking lot and bar on game day.

With one look at the menu, I knew I had to try the fried pickles. I have only had fried pickles once before, so I was looking forward to my second experience. I was expecting them to be disc shaped and eat them like potato chips, but to my surprise they were spears! I had never thought about a different way to slice and fry a pickle. These pickles were awesome! The fried coating was light and crispy. The pickles had that crunch and sour salinity that you would expect. When combined with a ranch type sauce, a real winning combination was produced. I am not a pickle fan, but I would definitely order these again. If I am ever in Clemson for a game, The Esso Club will provide my pregame fuel.

Kirstin - I’ve never had a fried pickle because I’m not a fan of the disc-shaped ones, but these look so good! Do you have a recipe? I’d love to try making these at home!
