Have you been to Boulder,CO? Boulder is home to the University of Colorado. I had always heard great things about this mile high college town, and after this trip I was definitely not disappointed. This trip was special because I got to eat along with two of my fellow badger teammates from college. My friend Ben was a diver on the swim team and is originally from Boulder. He lives there now and was my culinary guide. My friend Jackie, ( who you might remember from the Austin Trip) is doing an internship at the Olympic Training Center (in Colorado Springs) this summer and drove up for the afternoon. Now that you know the back story of the weekend, on to the food.
Every town has a street where there are lots of shops and restaurants, Madison has State Street, Austin has 6th Street, in Boulder it is Pearl Street. Pearl Street is special because it has a pedestrian mall on it that is bricked over and closed off to cars. I will go more in depth on Pearl St in a later post.

While walking down Pearl, Ben saw this guy waving a sign. He immediately responded “Taylor, I think they have a cupcake that has bacon on it” Bacon and Chocolate on a cupcake, that is my dream dessert! I had to check it out.

At Tee and Cakes, they have some of the prettiest and most interesting cupcakes I have ever seen. There is no way I could get just one, so I went with the Chocolate Bacon, Strawberry Milkshake, and the Salted Caramel. These are all three flavor that I had never had on a cupcakes before.

The Chocolate Bacon is just as amazing as it sounds. I have had Chocolate covered Bacon, and even tried to create my own Elvis cupcake with candied bacon, but this was superior to all of these. The cake was moist and tender, the chocolate was dark and rich, and the bacon, well do I really need to explain? Ok, I will. The bacon was crispy and salty. It combined with chocolate is really a lethal combination (literally and figuratively, I am sure that if you ate enough chocolate covered bacon you would instantly have a heart attack).

The Strawberry milk shake consisted of strawberry cake, strawberry icing and a cookie straw. This cake was full of strawberry flavor. It is also the prettiest cupcake that I have ever seen. I love how they added the cookie to look like a straw. It definitely completes the milkshake theme. Thank you Jackie for being my hand model.

The final cupcake I investigated was the salted caramel. Rich chocolate cake with salted caramel icing, how do you go wrong? If you have never had the salted caramel before I suggest you try it. It might sound strange, but it really does work well together. The mixing of salt and sweet really gives the taste buds a unique experience.

It might be that the air is thinner at 5,400 feet or maybe it is the crisp mountain water. I am not sure what it is, but the folks at Tee and Cakes definitely provided me with a unique cupcake experience. If you are ever in Boulder and a bacon lover, you owe it to yourself to try the bacon chocolate cupcake (I was definitely happy I did).
Like cupcakes? Here are some of the great cupcakes I have had throughout the Country.
