deep dish taco pizza in Iowa City, Iowa

Have you been to Iowa? or Iowa City for that matter? Well I have. This is the first of the dishes that Brett and I had on our western road trip. I had been to the University of Iowa before for swimming, but we would just go to Olive Garden to eat. On this trip I only had time for one meal, so I had to make it a good one.

I had no idea where to go, so I asked my friend and Iowa Alum, Caitlin, where I should dine. She recommended the Airliner.

The Airliner has been around since 1944 and is famous for their pizza. On a side not, one intriguing item on the menu that I resisted from ordering was the  Airbus. I really want one of those shirts, but I decided (well it was more Brett strongly suggesting) that this selection would not be the best idea to start off a 10 day eating trip. Next time I am in Iowa, I will order the Airbus, finish it, and get one of those sweet shirts.

Now back to what I actually ordered. The Airliner has normal cheese pizza, but why try that when I could order a Taco Deep Dish Pizza! Yes that is right Taco Pizza in a Deep Dish Pan!

Look at that deep pan!

This pizza consisted of tomato sauce, seasoned beef, black olives, onions, covered in their special cheese blend, topped with lettuce, tomato and corn chips. Pretty much a taco in pizza form.

Cutting this pizza and trying not to make a mess proved very difficult.

It might look messy, but wow this tasted amazing.

The deep dish crust was necessary for the amount of toppings on this pizza. I do not usually eat my pizza with a knife and fork, but that was the only way to eat this delicious meal. There were many other great looking pizzas at Airliner, and based upon the taco pizza I am pretty sure you can not go wrong with whatever you choose.

On a completely different note, I am in NYC right now on my way to Vermont for a Farm to Table Weekend at Good Commons. I have never been to Vermont before, but I am excited to see what I find. Next week, I will share with you what I discover. I arrived in NYC around noon to discover that the B&H superstore is 10 blocks from where the shuttle is to pick me up. I had to go and take a visit.

The only other store that has left me with such an overwhelming feeling, was when I was in Austin, TX, and visited the flagship Whole Foods. Visiting the B&H store was what I would call a shopping experience. I usually go to a store knowing what I am going to get and am in and out as fast as possible. Whole foods, B&H, and Ikea are different. They are places that you can go and walk around with no set purchase in mind. When I walk out empty handed from one of these store I do not feel like I have wasted my time.

I have bought many things through B&H’s catalog over the yeas, so it was pretty to cool to see where my purchases actually were shipped from and my money was going. If you are a fan of camera gear I definitely suggest you visit while in NYC.

Jacinda - Taylor, while I am a big fan, I really encourage you to try places that are not only popular with the 19-21 yr old crowd. I grew up in Iowa City and currently live in Madison. For some reason outsiders are convinced that Airliner is a place to go for good food, and I would name 10 other places ahead for good food in IC. I am not sure how people are getting this information. Airliner is where you go for cheap drinks to get really drunk. Next time try Atlas or Motley Cow. A mere block from Airliner with a far, far better bar and beer selection and really good, solid food.

Sarah - I second Jacinda’s recommendation of Atlas, and want to add Short’s, Sam’s, and Bluebird to the list. I’m glad you enjoyed The Airliner, but man, I can’t stand that place. I’ve lived in Iowa City for 6 years–I will show you a good time next time you stop through! :)
