Thank you so, so much for this encouragement. I recently submitted my first photo to foodgawker and found out today it was rejected. This was what I felt was my personal best photo, so it stung a little to be told it had poor lighting. Your encouragement and tutorials are immensely helpful. Thanks so much!

Thank you for this post! I recently started a blogging about food (three posts!) and am beginning to experiment with food photography. I’ve always been interested and amazed by photographing food and the detail that goes into putting a recipe together online, and thought better late than never!
My first submission on foodgawker was accepted, and the next two were rejected for styling reasons, which is how after checking the FAQs I ended up reading this!
I get that judging food photography is highly subjective, so I’m not too bent out of shape with getting rejected. I just want to keep improving my photography by learning, and your website is a great resource for this : )

Thanks for this! I was starting to get a little annoyed, but now when I look back, I’ve only done 8 posts on my blog, and each picture has been better than the one before. In my opinion, of course. Although I think I took some doozies today. Horrible lighting…gggrrrr. Plus, an awful camera doesn’t help. I’ll get there…

What a helpful post! As a beginner photographer, these basics are really helpful. Good tip about cropping for the sites that require 250×250 pictures. I think a lot about the space in my pictures when I take them, but not what they’ll look like if I have to crop them into a square. Thanks!
