Austin, TX University of Texas

At the beginning of April, I was lucky enough to spend a week in Austin, TX. Although I grew up in Charlotte, I was actually born in Austin. I only lived there for about 8 months, so I do not remember it. I will always call Charlotte home, but technically Austin is my original home. It will always hold a special place in my heart, and after this trip my stomach as well.

When I swam in college, we would compete at the Texas Invite. This gave me an opportunity to revisit Austin, but the majority of my time was spent at the pool. I would eat at some restaurants, but my diet was focused around racing and not a culinary adventure. After all, lots of BBQ and Tex Mex might not be the best choice before swimming a 1,650, 500, or 200. With this trip to Austin, the goal was simple. I wanted to find out what food this awesome town had to offer. Austin is home to the University of Texas Longhorns. It is a beautiful place that I often hear it referred to a larger version of Madison minus the snow.

After a week of eating in Austin I discovered a couple things

- Tex Mex is amazing. I now feel that every meal should be served with fresh chips and salsa.

- Always check out food served from a trailer.

- Cupcakes with celebrity names are tasty.

- You can spend hours in an 80,000 square foot grocery store

- there is awesome BBQ other than Pork

- Fresh tortillas are perfect to wrap anything in

- Everything should have the option of being drowned in green chile broth

Here is what I ate over the week.
