A couple months ago I spent a week eating my way through Athens, GA. Athens is home to the University of Georgia Bulldogs. This was my first trip to Athens in a few years.
Growing up, I would go to swim meets at the University of Georgia’s pool (really nice pool by the way), but this trip to Athens was different. Instead of spending my time in the pool, I spent my time roaming downtown Athens looking foe the best food places I could find. I ate everything ranging from tofu to a bacon topped donut. Below are the places I visited.
Mama’s Boy Peach Stuffed French Toast
Mama’s Boy Chocolate Cake for Breakfast
As you can see I had a pretty good weekend of food. Overall I discovered that Athen’s is an amazing food town and I must definitely put it in the same ranks as my college town, Madison. Is there anywhere else in Athens that I should check out on a return trip?

Hannah - So glad you enjoyed your time and your dining experience in Athens, Taylor! I am constantly amazed at the growth of inspired restaurants since I first arrived in Athens as a UGA student many moons ago. I’m happy to share your mouth-watering photography on the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau blog, http://www.athens-lifeunleashed.blogspot.com, and hope you’ll find your way back to Athens sometime soon!
Troye - Try Farm255 next go round!!!
Taylor - Thanks Hannah! I can not wait until my next visit to Athens! Such an awesome place!
Taylor - I definitely will! It was on my list, but so little time, so many places to eat. I will definitely give it a try with my next visit!
Chris C - Troye is right – Farm 255 is THE don’t miss restaurant in Athens. Despite a pricier menu, The National is fantastic as well. If you get outside of downtown to the 5 Points area of Athens, 5&10 should not be missed, nor should Cali-n-Tito’s.
Jaime Soha - Taylor – Athens is a great town for all things cultural – food, music, art, etc. I have moved to the area in the last few years. You definitely hit some of my fave spots. Next time try the Melting Point at the Foundry Inn & Spa.
William Hall - Awesome page! I too am in college and have an obsession with food. Your pictures made me hungry! Looking to try a few recipes and the whiskey lemonade!

Senor Soul - The best Mexican food in town in Senor Sol (formerly El Sol), at the Oglethorpe/Tallassee exit off the Athens Perimeter.
thomas johnson - Thanks from an Old Dawg! http://www.wedgeorgia.com
Charlesq - Just outside of Athens, on the Atlanta Highway past the mall….Stricklands is a world-class, unreal meat-and-three joint. EVERYTHING done right.
Missy - YUM! Every time I go to Athens I have to hit The Grit, The Grill (for fries with feta dressing), and 5 Star Day. Good choices. I also love the Taco Stand just because it was my daily sustenance for years while I studied in Athens.
Mario - I haven’t been to Senor Sol, but the best Mexican food in town is hands down Agua Linda on Prince Ave. (they opened a second location elsewhere, but since I graduated I haven’t been there…always the original!). Awesome margaritas and killer burritos and chimichangas…throughout my travels across the country, I have yet to find a better chimichanga!
Also hit up the Blind Pig Tavern for the best burger in town!
Amy - I second Farm 255 (particularly their lunchtime Farm Cart – amazing afternoon meals at around $5) and Agua Linda. For barbecue, you can’t beat The Barbecue Shack (only open Thursday thru Saturday – order your banana pudding as soon as you sit down or they will run out and you will cry). Go to Five Points for The Royal Peasant – incredible pub food. On Fridays they serve a lamb burger that will make you grateful to be alive. Also try Yoguri for incredible, made-fresh-daily frozen yogurt. We’ve got so many great local places I can’t even begin to scratch the surface.
Madison has the BEST food in a college town, can you prove me wrong ? » Taylor Takes a Taste - [...] a weekend in athens… [...]
Frank Simmons - WOW, you brought a tear to my eye, Having been born and raised in Athens, and only able to go back once every 5 years or so it was a welcome site to see all the old faves and some new ones to try next time i go home!! But where is the Varsity, ( or greasy V as we lovingly called it) nothing beats a double chili cheese burger a P.C. and a Frosted Orange with a Peach pie!!!
Whitney - Cal-n-Titos!! Such a fun atmosphere, byob, and GREAT good!!
Taylor - I went there while in Athens, unfortunately the pics didn’t turn out very well (it was at night) but I loved the food and atmosphere! I will definitely visit when I go back!
chris - While I totally dont know you I have to leave my 2 cents since it hasnt been mentioned yet and that would be White Tiger Gourmet. its located off of boulevard in normal town. They have hands down the best pulled pork in town beating out a lot of the solid BBQ joints we have.
Taylor - Thanks Chris, I have heard of it, but didn’t have time during the 2 days I was in Athens. Next visit to Athens, I will definitely try out their pulled pork! Thanks !
